Our Positive Training Policies

These policies have been created to help every student in class have the best experience possible.  Thank you for abiding by these guidelines and promoting a safe and fun place to learn for you and your classmates!  If you feel like you may be an exception to one or more of these policies, please contact us prior to attending your first class so that we can work out a suitable solution.

DISRUPTIVE DOGS

Any dog attending a group class which, in the opinion of the training instructor, is unsuitable for the group class environment (either because it does not have the necessary foundation skills for the group class or because it is being  disruptive, uncontrollable, unpredictable, or aggressive) will be transferred from the group class and referred to a more suitable group class or for private instruction.  The balance of the group class tuition (less the prorated cost of lessons already attended) will be applied towards the tuition of the alternate service.

We strive to make dogs and their handlers as comfortable as possible in class. There is an acclimation period involved with joining a group class, and some barking and overall lack of focus is normal. We will offer what advice and solutions we can for the setting, but please remember that we are instructors in a group class setting, you are the dog trainer. If calming down your dog takes a lot of time away from the other students, they will understandably be upset. Dogs that are disruptive also tend to raise the stress levels of everyone in the room, which is what we want to avoid. If you are concerned that your dog may fall into this category, please contact us to discuss this prior to your first class.

QUESTIONS IN CLASS

We encourage students to ask questions in class! If you have the question, the odds are good that someone else does too! However, please keep questions limited to the topic or skill being discussed at the time. Classes are planned out to include all of the skills you will be learning, and we cannot rearrange the schedule to cover a skill that is not planned for that session. There is usually a five minute time frame at the end of class to ask other questions about things that may be going on in the home or outside of class. Please understand that some behaviors (including but not limited to: resource guarding, reactivity, aggression and fearful reactions) are outside of the scope of a group class and cannot be answered in that setting. You will be asked to send an email with your question so that we can make suggestions for moving forward.

Classes and private sessions are scheduled back to back, so unfortunately there is not adequate time for questions before or after class. The instructor needs time to prepare for the next class, take a short break, and give her own dogs a break as well. That is why we ask that all questions be brought up during the allotted class hour. You may also email affinitycanineeducation@gmail.com if you have questions between classes.

BEING PREPARED FOR CLASS

We request that each student bring the following items to class each week: a mat or bed for your dog to lay on and for teaching settle exercises, enough small, soft, high value treats to last the length of the class, a treat pouch, fanny pack or other system to hold your treats on your body and out of your hands (please do not bring treats in plastic bags, this is basically bribery!) and your own Snuffle Mat, stuffed Kong, bully stick or other item for your dog to chew on (no non-food toys please). Class is stressful, and chewing and sniffing are soothing. We are trying to help your dog get to a state of mind where they are able to listen and learn. We will have some items available, but please be prepared to keep your dog occupied when necessary.

CANCELLATIONS

Rolling Enrollment Classes: If you must cancel or reschedule your group class session, please give us a minimum of 4 hours notice in writing that you are unable to attend. There is no charge for cancellations or reschedules made within 4 hours of the start of class. If you do not give proper notice, you will be considered a no show and that session will not be eligible for a make up class. Please do not attend a class that you are not signed up for. Each of your sessions must be scheduled in advance.

Consecutive Enrollment Classes: If you must cancel or reschedule your group class enrollment, please give us a minimum of 5 days notice prior to the start date of your class so that we can offer your spot to other clients who are waiting to schedule with us.  There is no charge for cancellations and reschedules made more than 5 days in advance.

There are no refunds (or class credit) given for cancellations made within 5 days of the start of your class UNLESS there is a waiting list for the class and we are able to fill your spot with another student.

There are no refunds (or class credit) given for cancellations made after the class has started. If, after the class has started, your class instructor feels that a different service would be more suitable to what you and your dog need, the prorated balance of your tuition may be applied to the tuition of that different service. Tuition transfers are granted at the instructor's discretion only. Personal decisions not to continue to attend a class will not be awarded a credit for another service.

Private Lessons: If you must cancel or reschedule your private training session, please give us a minimum of 7 Days notice so that we can offer your session time to other clients who are waiting to schedule with us. There is no charge for cancellations and reschedules made more than 7 Days in advance.

Cancellations or reschedules made within 7 Days of your session time will be charged to your package (or credit card on file) as a full session. Thank you for your understanding and commitment to this policy. This helps to ensure that our time is used most efficiently and we are able to help as many clients as possible. It is also the best practice to help you reach your training goals with your dog as efficiently as possible. Please keep in mind that if you do need to cancel or reschedule your lesson within 7 Days of your appointment time and thus forfeit the lesson, you may also need to add additional time to your package in order to reach your training goals.

MAKE-UP OPTIONS FOR MISSED CLASSES

Rolling Enrollment Classes: Students of rolling enrollment classes are eligible for make up sessions for any classes were missed as long as proper written notice was received. Due to the nature of rolling enrollment classes, there may not be room in your usual class right away. Please contact us to discuss scheduling your make up session.

Consecutive Enrollment Classes: We are not able to offer make-up classes for our consecutive enrollment classes. If you have to miss a class, and have given written notice as outlined above, you may be eligible to attend one of our rolling enrollment class sessions as a make-up. Please contact us to discuss this option.

REFUNDS

There are no refunds for portions of group classes that are missed due to personal scheduling conflicts or classes that are not attended for other reasons.  All private lesson package sales are final - no refunds can be given for sessions left unused or expired.

DOGS IN HEAT

Dogs in heat are not permitted to attend classes due to the overwhelming distraction this will present to the other dogs in the room. We ask that dogs remain absent from class from first sign of heat cycle until 10-14 days from last sign of blood in the heat cycle.

INCLEMENT WEATHER

If a class is cancelled due to inclement weather, that decision will be made (and students notified via email) no later than 2 hours prior to the scheduled class start time, unless the students have been previously notified to be on "stand-by" for a last minute decision.  In the case of a canceled class or classes, make-up sessions will be offered.

CHILDREN IN CLASS

Children are welcome to attend group classes and private training sessions under the supervision of an adult.  For children under the age of 10, a second, non-participating adult must be present with the children while on the premises.  If your children will not be participating in the training, please consider bringing something to keep them occupied. Children should not be permitted to approach or pet other student's dogs, move about the room independent of an adult or unless specifically asked to participate in an activity, run, jump, skip or make loud noises. All of these actions could cause stress to the other participants, and in some cases trigger a fear or chase reaction toward the children. Disruptive children may be asked to leave the clasroom. Children under the age of 17 may not, under any circumstances, be dropped off with the dog to participate in class in the absence of a parent or guardian.

VACCINATIONS

In order to attend group classes or private lessons at our facility, your dog must be current on vaccinations according to your veterinarian’s recommendations.  Rabies and DHPP (or titers showing immunity) are required, and we strongly recommend that your dog also be current on Bordetella and Canine Influenza vaccinations.

LEASHES & CLEAN UP

Dogs should remain on leash at all times unless you are specifically asked to unleash the dog or drop the leash. Owners are responsible for cleaning up after their dogs while on the premises, including the gravel and grassy areas.

TRAINING TOOLS

No choke collars, prong collars, electric collars or other pain-inflicting training tools are to be used while on the training facility premises, including in the parking lot. No exceptions.
